Museum of Lycian Civilizations - Andriake Demre

The Antalya Museum of Lycian Civilizations, situated in Andriake, offers a captivating journey through the rich history of the Lycian people. Andriake, once a vital port and logistical hub for sailors traversing the Mediterranean, played a pivotal role in facilitating trade and commerce throughout antiquity. The Granarium, an imposing structure dating back to the reign of Emperor Hadrian, stands as a testament to the port’s significance during the Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods.

Today, the museum stands in place of the Imperial Silo, showcasing a diverse array of archaeological artifacts that provide insights into the local traditions and unique tomb architectures of the Lycian civilization. The museum’s eight halls are dedicated to various aspects of Lycian history and culture, with exhibits organized thematically according to subjects such as Lycian History and Geography, Epigraphy, Coins, Economy and Social Life, and Religious Culture.

Each hall offers visitors an immersive experience, supported by interactive presentations and information boards that provide context for the artifacts on display. From intricately carved stone sarcophagi to finely crafted pottery and ornate jewelry, the museum’s collection offers a comprehensive overview of Lycian life and society.

One of the highlights of the museum is the ship simulation in the seventh hall, which brings to life the bustling port city of ancient Lycia through animation. Visitors can embark on a virtual journey through the region, gaining a deeper understanding of its maritime heritage and commercial activities.

The museum’s responsibility extends beyond Andriake, encompassing the Central Lycia region, including the city of Myra, and parts of Western Lycia up to the city of Xanthos. The majority of the museum’s collection comprises artifacts obtained from excavations in these regions, contributing to our understanding of Lycian history and culture.

The Antalya Museum of Lycian Civilizations offers a captivating exploration of one of antiquity’s most intriguing civilizations. Through its exhibits, interactive presentations, and immersive experiences, the museum invites visitors to delve into the rich tapestry of Lycian heritage and discover the enduring legacy of this ancient culture.
